These Northern Finnish gents formed in 2007 and started out as a Megadeth covers band, so you would reckon that thrash music features heavily in this 3-track promo? Yes to a certain extent, but there are little bits and pieces taken from the Death and traditional metal genres too. I say traditional metal because the vocals from Tuomo Marttinen (when not screaming) often come across like the first period of the Matt Barlow era Iced Earth, displaying that low end dominance. Whilst thrash musicianship comes to the mix in minor areas, the opening tune ‘Say It With Violence’ has the epic metal approach, simply because there is no utter Bay Area or Germanic thrash element, it’s mid-paced and possesses a ripping solo and is also blessed with excellent production. The arrangement is full of the right stuff; guitars, acoustic passages, strong vocal lines and an evolving flow to the music. Sparing no image concern is their artwork, a great piece from Turkka G. Rantanen playing on a demonic image of Kali (that appears to feature a lot in other recent albums actually; it must be the year for this one!). The gruffer elements to the sound of this tune go down the mid period Dark Tranquility path - a good thing, so no need to dismiss this band because they are not so “trendy” anymore. NOW the thrash comes with ‘Run Like Hell’ with some low-end dirt (a-la “Cowboys” era Pantera), “Ripper Owens”-esque scream. A tantric event if ever there was, melodic German thrash, similar to Paradox but without the vocals of course! This one is full of energy and an as expected neck working experience.
Newest band member on drums Ville Alakörkkö provides a battering of the kick drums and is ready to bring things up and down a notch as required.. Final track on offer, ‘Left for the Scavengers’ is more West Coast, like Testament, a torturous high register scream also features again, I bet that hurts! This is a strong release, a complimentary demonstration of the talent and song arranging abilities of this young Finnish band that should get credit for this excellent effort.
