Groovy German grindcore anyone? This band formed way back in 1996 and has been on a hiatus in recorded output terms since 2006. Now back with a vengeance, do Mörser have what it takes to keep up with the current cream of the crop? That I leave to your decision, however, one thing is for sure, your head will take a pounding before the day is out with this album.
Whilst I like the music on offer, I find myself listening without taking particular note of any particular tune. The album flows well but tends to merge into oneself. Perhaps a tad unfair, even with the variation on the drum patterns and a constant buzz saw grind guitar tone. For me the vocals are where it appears un-nervy for me. Whilst brutal and aggressive, they are not as clear as some modern bands produce, purists may like this, but they sound a little quiet in the mix for my liking. ‘Concrete Head Crush’ with its mad intro sound bite and frantic drumming makes you wake up. ‘Synthetics for the Devil’ stands out as far as it can for me out of all 11 tracks on offer, there is variation in time signatures and plenty of things going on, brutal death vocally, and short enough to give you that little burst of energy needed to get through the day but you may wander into obscurity whilst under their spell. ‘Blind’ takes you into the grind territory proper, still madcap bursts on the guitars sound a little out of place, but the kick drums are fast as the proverbial.
‘1st Class Suicide’ is an album full of promise, but I would have preferred the vocals louder in the mix. On the one hand the album is an exhausting listen and then on the other hand further listens can lead it into the black hole of “some band doing similar stuff” but not being able to pinpoint the release title. Having said that, if a little death and grind is your flavour then Mörser will be right up your street.
