Now on their 9th album, Abominant have been rattling the cages of the extreme death metal community for some years, brandishing harshness, grimness and pure unadulterated hatred to all things sane. Long standing loyal label Deathgasm have again given this US band a further lease for life.
Upon first listen, I don’t really think much of this release; in fact, I skip forward before the end of each track, and it is full on. Spend time with the album and you can take the tiny intricacies that little bit more. ‘Baptized by Steel’ and ‘Bloodland’ have some wonderful guitar work, the solos are pretty spectacular, although I am still not finding much want or need for the vocal style, that’s just my taste, nothing wrong with what we have, listeners will find an unholy rasp and snarl quite appealing if the truth be told. By the time I get to third or fourth listen, ‘Where Demons Dwell’ has me by the balls, although it’s pretty annoying it took this long to get here. Adrenaline takes over on some of the tunes, I lose the rhythm of the drums, it becomes chaotic, but the solid musicianship somehow manages to get things back on track, like the lightening speed of ‘Rain of Ash’, and it’s a wonder how to be honest even if you do have some Hate Eternal and Monolith Deathcult influences becoming prominent. After numerous listens, this is to be fair, a decent release, not that different or individual, but at what these guys do, their experience shines through a blood soaked moon and will most likely devastate some of their peers and fans alike.
A lot of bands adopt this style, its not brutal cookie monster, neither is it rotten or crusty. ‘Where Demons Dwell’ is a marked improvement to earlier releases and an unholy racket bringing together horrific influences and a need for your ears to bleed.
