Hailing from Leeds this new band are apparently comprised of former and current members of Tangaroa and Dragged Into Sunlight and with that in mind you have all you need to inform you that this is going to be a bit of an ugly racket and ain’t that the truth. The one press bite they have on their one sheet describes this as “twenty minutes of unremitting ferocity” and I couldn’t have put it better myself.
Pressing play sees you flung straight into things with a swaggering guitar and bass vying for attention on opener ‘Frostbite.’ The vocals roar and are spat out like a wounded animal and one wonders what to compare this uncouth tumult too. Well it has a downbeat sort of feel to it and a down tempo one too, there is a technical flair to it that does remind of Tangaroa instrumentally whereas the vocals are more in line with an unhinged core sort of band, very much on the nasty side of things. This strikes as the sort of band that could build upon the sort of mentality laid down by other British groups such as Medulla Nocte, Labrat and Iron Monkey; it certainly has that ‘ugly’ sort of flair to it and is a brutal as a herd of rhinos on the charge. The guitar rifferama tempestuously clamours into ‘Dios Muerto’ and almost as though annoyed the drums plough away trying to beat everything else senseless in the mix. Vocals are over the top of everything though and the temper-tantrum charged rant has absolutely no chance of being silenced here. I think it’s fair to say that an undisciplined music fan would find this an ungodly racket and run screaming but for me it and anyone into extremity it really hits the mark.
There is absolutely no let up at all on these five tracks ‘Grindstein’ is absolutely full on with everything flying off the scale with a full-throated grinding, noisecore approach that will no doubt go down a storm live. It does slow into jagged guitar work and doomed drum beats before building up and going mental and finally collapsing in on itself. The mix is really professional and everything sounds sharp and pulverising and this strikes as a very professional affair. Apparently it is being released on 500 limited CD’s and also on download so if you want a physical copy (and with the choice why on earth would you not) get one before word spreads.
