Having formed in Italy in 2008, Vinterblot are the newest addition to an already packed genre of Viking Metal. Way before this EP was released, the band were performing songs from the likes of Amon Amarth and Opeth. When the first vocalist joined the band, they then started playing more black metal and folk music. Over time they improved their song writing and focused upon the new direction. The music concentrates on the themes of Norse Mythology and history due to members of the band having a deep interest on the subjects. The original vocalist left and was replaced by Phanaeus of Death Metal band Mharhb.
Their first and only (up to now) EP ‘For Asgard’ was recorded between July – August of this year, and impressed by the cover art of what looks like a Nordic mountainside, I couldn’t wait to listen.
The intro is very atmospheric with keyboards and an epic battle-like feel to it. It gives you the feeling that you’re in for something really special. ‘For Asgard,’ the first and album titled full length track on the EP, is no doubt inspired by Viking battle legends Amon Amarth. It has the same gutsy riffs and vocal style, and the only difference is a bit of black metal injected into the mix. ‘Naglfar’ has a catchy and seemingly continuous riff. I was especially impressed with the groovy middle section. The fast paced and brutal drum beats on this track gave me goose bumps and started my finger tapping. This is definitely a stronger song that the first. ‘As Sleipmir Rides’ is a beast of a concoction of black metal, Viking, death and even technical metal. Well put together. The solo is unexpected at the end, but a nice surprise to an already cracking track.
Another worthy mention on the EP is the last track ‘Blood Furnace’. I loved the intro, which gives the feeling of being sat around a campfire with the wind around you, and then it’s straight in with some immense riffs and vocals.
Considering these guys have been together for such a short time I am very impressed with what they have achieved in this EP. Although sometimes a little too Amon Amarth, they have still put their own recipe in there. I give a huge two thumbs up for this, definitely wanting to hear more from them. They should be signed .. pronto!
