I’ve been a keen follower of Avulsed since the release of their ‘Yearning for the Grotesque’ album back in 2003. The grandfathers of the Spanish death metal scene have finally got around to releasing their 6th full length studio album (not counting the covers albums or that horrific ‘dance remix’ album).
‘Nullo (The Pleasure of Self Mutilation)’ sees the band dredging the filth ridden depths of gory death metal once more, this time around with a gnarly production job, and a god awful bone-saw like guitar tone would take the enamel off your teeth at ten paces given the chance. Yes, as you’d expect – this is the aural equivalent of sitting and watching all six Saw films back to back (actually, that does Avulsed no justice at all – they’re definitely not THAT hard going on the attention span).
The guitars spin and twist around like a drill in flesh, tearing and rending with jagged hateful rhythms. The crushing lyrical backdrops make even the most hardened South American gang-related torture details seem like a frilly frolic in the park with flowers. With tracks such as ‘Breaking Hymens’ and the almost comical ‘She’s Hot Tonight (In My Oven)’ bookending the album, you can pretty much get the impression of exactly what sort of smouldering musical chunks of carnage lay in between.
Whilst this certainly doesn’t top their best works, it’s certainly another solid slab of unapologetic, unashamed audio destruction for those fascinated by the twisted side of life. Easily the perfect soundtrack for rubbernecking at car accidents on a Sunday afternoon.
