MMD are a Black/Death Metal band from Finland. Having formed in 2008, their most noteworthy member is guitarist and vocalist Abyss, the bass player of the cult band Beherit. This is a three track, 14 minute, promo taster.
The first track “This is my Sabbath” is a gem. It has the level of menace, catchiness, movement and vocals I would associate with the Norwegian band Ancient. The drums are constant enough to batter the life out of anyone. Sinister tones hang in the air.
For me tracks entitled “House on the … (insert as appropriate)” conjure up the image of fog-enveloped gothic residences at the top of a hill where horror reigns and no-one should go. “House of the Veiled Serpent” falls into this box. It is a creepy, disease-ridden track containing a mid-paced rant. Again it is distinguished by sinister background sounds. To finish, “Shapes” is slower still. It’s the heaviness that drives this one.
Stylistically and atmospherically, this falls somewhere between Ancient and Carpathian Forest. Without being totally mind-blowing, there’s definitely something to whet the appetite here. I look forward to hearing more.
