Despite this being Throneum’s 6th full length album, this is the first time I’ve ever come across these bunch of profane Poles. Currently a twosome, the band formed in 1996 as Throne releasing one demo in 1998, before deciding to add the extra ‘um’ to their name in 2000 (which obviously made all the difference, as they became a lot more prolific from then on).
These guys play a gristly brand of jarring blackened death metal which really rattled my bones nicely. With a surprisingly thin production, they certainly make up for it in terms of sacrilege and bile filled blasphemes. The vocals sound truly unhinged with a yelled gargle that merely adds to the dark appeal of the music that backs it. The guitars have a freezing feel to the riffs that remind me of that cold, unholy feeling At the Gates’ debut EP had (not that these guys are a sound-a-like in any way shape or form, it’s just something I picked up on). It’s a really true, bitter feeling, like these guys actually MEAN what they’re playing, living their lives in cold, dark hovels, scratching hateful hymns and arrangements into the walls in order to prepare for their bi-annual venture out to record their next album. Worryingly enough, there’s certainly no pretence here from what I can hear. I firmly believe they live off small animals that have scuttled past them in the darkness, as well as the moss and lichens that happen to have grown on their bodies over the years of inactivity.
Of course, I’m rambling bollocks now. But hopefully by now you’ll have some sort of idea of the bands’ ideology and sound. The music is of course solid as a rock, with some sublime headbanging sections to rock your socks off to. For me, whacking this bad boy on my stereo was a great way to end off a shitty day at the office, thus, I’ll soon be searching for more material from these dirty bastards in order to feed my mind with more unholy fun very shortly. Good stuff.
