This label has an uncanny knack of dragging these sort of technical deathcore bands kicking and screaming from all over the place. This lot come from Topeka and comes at you like Judy Garland throwing a strop, clicking her heels together and screaming get me the fuck outta here, I want to go back to Kansas. Actually I lied a bit as once you get past the impressive sci-fi futuristic intro and thrown headlong into ‘Valley Of The Kings’ you will realise that Stephen Babcock possesses a particularly beefy set of lungs and there is nothing girlie about his delivery in the slightest. Perhaps I was simply looking for something to say as with this style everything has pretty much already been said.
This aside Diskreet have forged a particularly impressive debut that even someone with quite a low tolerance to this sort of thing can appreciate. The musicianship is furious and doesn’t stand still for a second. Guitars are haywire as they strim up and down the scale, really getting the precise technicality across and the drumming is a solid battery, equally as dynamic and relentless. What I do find somewhat surprising is the statement that the band have been hailed as ‘The best new band in death metal’ by Kerrang of all places. Someone must have both pissed and put acid in their Frosted flakes that particular morning as it’s not the sort of statement I would have expected from that ahem highly esteemed publication.
This would be a great work out album if I participated in such things. For a start it sounds like musical gymnastics as well as a cleverly put together jigsaw puzzle where all the pieces are thrown down but somehow manage to land in the right place. There is a high degree of mechanicality (yes it’s not a proper word but you know what they mean) about it too and you do kind of feel like you are listening to the same song flung out in differing variations over and over.
For once I have run out of words here well before the band have finished blazing away out the speakers. Perhaps I should finish this with a corny cliché and say Diskreet are far from discreet but then again perhaps I should just fuck off.
