Artist: Triptykon
Album: Shatter
Type: EP
Label: Prowling Death/Century Media

Let’s face it. Triptykon’s debut album Eparistera Daimones is going to in the top ten for many a journo’s albums of 2010, and quite rightly so. The implosion of a band the calibre of Celtic Frost after such a successful return to form as ‘Monotheist’ would be enough to shake anyone’s faith. But, against the odds, Tom Gabriel Warrior managed to pull a second comeback out of the bag.

This latest EP is tied into an American tour to keep the momentum going, and features three new songs from the ‘Eparistera Daimones’ sessions as well as a couple of live Celtic Frost covers.

The title track ‘Shatter’ gets things moving with an almost tribal drum beat, around which the bass and guitar slither menacingly as Warrior and Slajh’s vocals creep out of the speakers. ‘I Am The Twilight’ is a nice nod to the classic Celtic Frost sound with it’s combination of a thunderous chugging riff and snarling vocals that sounds like the din of the abyss. ‘Crucifixus’ is an ambient-industrial nightmare that should, by every right, be on the next Alien film soundtrack. The first of the live tracks is a phenomenal rendition of ‘Circle of the Tyrants’, originally featured on To Mega Therion, that is performed with real gusto by the band. The second live track, and final song on the EP is ‘Dethroned Emperor’ from the Morbid Tales album that again, is a resounding success as an advert for Triptykon’s latest tour.

The three studio cuts are easily good enough to have been included on Eparistera Daimones and I can’t see why, other than space restrictions, that they’d be left off. This EP does it’s job though. It continues to ride the wave of momentum coming off their debut whilst creating expectations for the forthcoming tour. I just hope this means there will be another full length in the works for the near future.
