Vader are unquestionably one of the hardest working bands in today’s Death Metal scene and have been in existence for 26 years now. Twelve months ago, vocalist Peter was faced with the task of completely rebuilding the band, recruiting amongst others, guitarist Vogg of the well-known and ever popular Decapitated. Since then, the front man has recorded and released a new album entitled ‘Necropolis’; a more stripped down affair in comparison to 2006’s ‘Impressions in Blood’. Oliver Cass quizzed him via e-mail regarding the various changes in Vader.

OC: Having had your new touring line-up for almost a year now, can you comment on the present mood in the band?

P: Mood is more then great! We just finished the first, Polish part of the tour supporting our new album “Necropolis” . We have done 15 shows for almost 10.000 crazy Fans and now we head to West Europe for the next 30 dates. The Team works perfect! There’s so much better if you know, that everybody has fun and really wanna give 100% power on stage. No crybabies, no long faces... This is what I needed: motivation! Three tours and numbers of concerts are behind us. A year of hard work, that made us even more hungry for more!

OC: Although such drastic changes in a band can be quite damaging, from what was said late last year, it sounded more like it was revitalising. As posted on Blabbermouth, being part of Vader has also inspired Vogg to reform Decapitated even after the death of Vitek. I assume being on tour in such a hard working band has been very inspirational for him. What is your view on this matter?

P: I always supported Decapitated and will do it also in the Future, even if I know, that one day Vogg will leave Vader to join his band. Decapitated deserves to rise again and Vogg should stay on stage-not to sell equipment in the store. We have agreement and will play together yet till the end of 2009. What next? We will see. However I’m gonna look for a replacement pretty soon.

OC: Musically, ‘Necropolis’ is a much more groovy album than ‘Impressions...’. It is not as dark either, partially because Vesania’s Siegmar has not recorded any dramatic keyboard parts. Did this change come about because Daray left the band, severing the communication, or was it a more intentional choice, leaving the three main instruments to speak?

P: Daray’s departure has nothing to do with the sound of “Necropolis”. Previous album was different in almost every aspect. With new release I wanted to get back to first Vader’s works: more rough, with minimum keyboards or samples use. From the other side the album is not as rough as “Litany”, though some songs are even faster and more brutal than on that one. “Impressions...” was much about “blood” and that was a concept. “Necropolis” is not. The new album has everything that makes our music so “vaderish”...and more.

OC: There are hints of older Vader albums scattered within ‘Necropolis’, whereas ‘Impressions...’ was a much more ‘of the moment’ Vader album. Although having parted with the previous line up, was this musical ‘link to the past’ important in establishing Vader is still the same band?

P: I wanted to bring back “older Spirits” of Vader indeed. It wasn’t but sooooo much essential for “Necropolis”. It is new album of the band still sounding like Vader. Music is and should be spontaneous. That’s why I love to work in the studio and the only think I like better is playing on stage. Vader has found its style many years ago - somewhere between “De Profundis” and “Black To The Blind”... We keep the style evolving naturally. Of course-we could follow, what’s popular at the moment on Metal scene. We could play with more “modern” style or paint our faces or something more and -surely -many, usually new fans would love it,y’know. But what for??? We are still something “new” for those, who came with new generations of Metal fans. We survived doing what we do best: Vader Metal!!!

OC: Also, why the decision to record all the instruments other than the drums yourself? Was it for practical reasons or do you wish to keep the band as a touring line up only?

P: This “decision” is as old as Vader itself. Practical reasons are significant here. As I said before - we WORK in the studio with new material. Being a composer I know everything best and being a guitarist and bassist (I did play bass before I started Vader yet) I can record all tracks quick. Only the first two releases of Vader were recorded different ‘cause we had everything done already. We know from history, that (in Music) longer time for composing doesn’t mean always great composing. One needs a month but the other one just an hour to do the same... However-it’s not a composer but the fans, who’s gonna like it or not. I still love Metallica’s “Ride The Lightning” album better then “Death Magnetic” , though the first one was recorded in two weeks and the other one two years... Back to Your question. 90% of all time in Vader is touring, playing concerts... So the line up, which is able to play so intensely, is most important. It is not a problem to find, for instance, a guitarist, who can play Vader songs...This is just one of some features necessary to join the band.

OC: Although ‘Necropolis’ has not yet been released, you have been playing a couple of songs from the album on tour for a couple of months. What has the crowd reaction been like on receiving these new tracks? Which songs do you have in mind to for the upcoming tours with Marduk?

P: Splendidly!!!! We were playing “Rise Of The Undead” already before the album is out. Maniax know this song from Vader’s official site and they react awesome!!! “Necropolis” is gonna be out in US 22nd Sept. but it’s in the stores in Europe since 21st August. We added to new set 5 new songs and will add one more for European part of the Tour. Response for the new album is more than great, so is for new live set! We also added some very old tracks from “The Ultimate...” album. All together is fine mix of total Death Metal attack!

OC: Has Harry Maat written any more lyrics for Vader, or have you dealt with these more this time?

P: Harry prepared a lot of great lyrics for me, from which four I used on “Necropolis”. This time I had so much thoughts collected in my mind so I had to “spend” them. Only “Rise Of The Undead” was written yet in December. The rest of my texts were made in Hertz Studio.

OC: Many thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. Is there anything you would like to add for your English/Polish fans in England?

P: Too bad, that we don’t play in UK this Falls... What I can but promise is, that we prepare a special Tour for UK/Ireland in 2010. We never forget Metal Maniax on the Islands !!!! See You soon.... Thanx for interview and support!!!
