ANNOTATIONS OF AN AUTOPSY, INGESTED & MARTYR DEFILED
LEEDS SWEENEY TODDS - 07/11/08
Things didn’t get off to a good start as my expected guest list entry failed to materialize, plus having arrived slightly late I missed the opening act called Man The Life Boats, but by the sounds of their last few chords it was fairly predictable death and metalcore. I caught Martyr Defiled earlier this year at the Ghostfest held in the same venue and was fairly impressed with their brand of deathcore. Tonight was no different as the young lads whipped up a flurry of activity on the dance floor almost instantly. As the band played, each deathcorester took it in turn to bounce around athletically to which my sister pointed out it is just like the break dancers of yesteryear each taking turns to strut their stuff whilst the others stood and judged. The inevitable crushing beatdowns in virtually every song of their set ensured a favourable response from the very young crowd sporting their salon styled haircuts.
After the predictability of Martyr Defiled I knew the crowd was about to be battered into oblivion by Ingested’s truly brutal death metal despite being short of a bassist. Technically the band was far superior than all on the night, yet their carnal brutality seemed lost on most and it took a party of stalwart death metallers to show how it is really done in the pit. I found it strange that the bands absolutely pulverizing breakdowns and horrifyingly heavy guitar riffs were greeted with chuckles as the death metal lads charged into the metalcore kids and flattened two of them onto the deck. Ingested sure know how to write extremely catchy riffs and balance them with an air of technicality. The pleasantly titled “Anal Evisceration” created mayhem in the pit as Jay (vocals) jumped off the stage and persisted in shoving the metalcore lads about to provoke a response which worked a treat. The look in Jay’s eyes was murderous. It was noticeable that the guys on stage were very relaxed despite the absolute barrage of a song like “Intercranial Semen Intercourse” (I think it was called - nice eh!!!). Deciphering death metal roared song titles is damn difficult you know. After the initial indifference of the young crowd Ingested had made a few new fans and with their debut album due next spring, I for one am looking forward to the carnage it will unleash on the world.
Annotations Of An Autopsy (can’t stand the band name at all) had a sizeable following and got right down to a set of fashionable deathcore with the odd metalcore glint here and there. Technically proficient and professionally tight the bands brand of metal was catchy enough to set the pit guys and gals off into the usual windmilling and chicken-moshing-pogoing which always makes me giggle. They gave very few song titles (which if they were, were indecipherable) and with no set list on stage song titles are absent. Despite the tight dueling guitar riffing, I felt the riffs were rather calm and a touch stale in places due to predictability. These bands really should check out a band like Pig Destroyer just to see how punishing guitar riffing can really be. I did enjoy the death metal elements that the band employed to good effect even though they seemed lost on some. It was good see the Ingested guitarist plough through the middle to stoke up some violence for the band. After about 20 to 25 minutes the band finished and that was it. This scene has such a glut of bands at the moment that I feel an oncoming purge is due to weed out the driftwood and I do hope that when it occurs all the bands tonight survive it as each had something to offer to the scene.
