GLENN HUGHES & SCOTT MCKEON

LONDON ISLINGTON ACADEMY - 05/10/10

Just a couple of weeks ago I was granted the rare privilege of seeing Black Country Communion in the intimate environs of John Henry’s Studios and was blown away by the up close and personal performance. With that in mind there was no way I was going to miss another chance to see electrifying front man Glenn Hughes in action – albeit this time in a solo capacity. My night in the packed Islington Academy started with an unremarkable set of blues rock from Scott McKeon which whilst inoffensive sounded as if it might just have been better suited to a Sunday lunchtime slot in your local boozer. Still tonight was only ever going to be about Glenn Hughes and his band and when they took to the stage I’m afraid Scott was instantly forgotten. The sound was magnificent, Glenn’s voice was unbelievable and the one time Purple man has surrounded himself with a truly outstanding group of musicians. Guitarist Soren Andersen in particular was a joy to watch and hear – reminding me a little of the much missed Tommy Bolin. Glenn himself seemed utterly energized, revelling in his performance as he explored every inch of the stage and the vocal show piece, ‘Don’t Let Me Bleed’, was breathtaking. Other highlights in a set overflowing with magical moments were ‘Keepin’ Time’, dedicated to the late Mel Galley, ‘Medusa’, which also featured in that Black Country Communion set, the thunderous ‘Burn’ which concluded the set and best of all a stunning ‘Soul Mover’. That’s two of the year’s best gigs which Glenn Hughes has given me – a big thank you to the Voice Of Rock.
