THE LAMP OF THOTH + STUKA SQUADRON –
LONDON UNICORN 20/03/10
Underground northern legends THE LAMP OF THOTH have gained themselves a little bit of a cult status, with their various vinyl pressings etc, they go for a lot of money as they sell out pretty much from the date of release. This was strangely my first live encounter, don’t ask me how, but I have managed to miss every gig they have played over the last couples of years or so. A trademark fuzz and tone about the guitars spells good tunes in the shape of ‘I Love the Lamp’. A busy crowd, not much singing with the band but ‘Blood of Satan’s Claw’ is the tune I was waiting for. Where else do you shout “hey you, you motherf*ckin’ whore”? A good quality set and a strong support for the band.
I must admit, I was a little worried for STUKA SQUADRON, when they were going on last, as I had heard most of the crowd were out to see the Lamp. But in any case, these vampire pilots made a good stage show sporting a new guitarist, whom had some amp problems from the start, and a borrowed drummer. Right into new tracks, ‘Tales of the Ost’ is a good sign of things to come. Their stagecraft just keeps on getting better each time these guys play live, whilst Fang’s voice is getting stronger by the day. ‘Stuka Squadron’ and ‘We Drink Blood’ still remain the highlights of the set for me and it was pleasing to see a healthy crowd taking note and being drawn in by the squadron. True metal warriors and cult stoner/doom, you would think on paper a strange collective, but man, this was a match made in musical nirvana. The UK has a lot of talent, and two of its gems played stunning sets tonight.
