Aha the olde three way grind split, sounds a bit painful doesn’t it? This one comes at us like a particularly meaty sandwich with the bread made of Portuguese bands and the filling Australian. I like this approach as sometimes with this type of music getting confronted by a CD of one band with anything up to and beyond 50 songs can be a bit much. This is a less daunting prospect as the three bands only deliver between six and eight numbers each and keep this nice and compact, pretty much giving an EP’s worth of material each.
I briefly caught some of Grog at SWR festival 2009 but memory of them does not really stand out, shame as their part of this is fun packed to say the least. Adopting a daft intro and samples from what sound like whacky porno movies they may not be doing anything particularly original. However when they are barraging away on numbers like ‘Fellowship Of The Shaved Balls’ it sounds like someone has got a bit carried away and sliced their scrotum sack clean through. This is mad and the vocals are completely rabid and unhinged. This does fly in, fists pounding and is fast as fuck but the guitars keep the pace and frantically dish out melody even at this deranged velocity. Grog also manage to get the best song title out of the CD with ‘Vaginal Teen Grind Fluids Make Us Groove’ and it’s nice to note that even after 18 years of spewing out this sort of unkempt filth they have obviously not grown up any.
The sharp sound of Grog is clearly down a notch as the brutal bass heavy Roadside Burial take up their part and it’s not a bad name for this band from Oz considering a film like Wolf Creek. They give the more serious vibe to their music with samples from another home grown favourite Romper Stomper and the music is bludgeoning with much more of a death metal feel to it. The vocals add to that as they gurgle and gargle away, singer Karkuss has a really meaty delivery and it’s a thick and fast one. You don’t really note one song stopping and the next starting, there’s just a brief pause in the rapid fire drum bombast and then we are off again. Song titles like ‘Pick-Axe Coma’ and ‘Binge On Blood’ pretty much sum up the mindset here and this is good listening stuff as you hack up the next silly tourist who has traipsed into your backyard.
You cannot help but love Pussy Vibes as despite suggesting more porno loops their section is entitled Earth Vs The Martians and they pepper their alien attacking songs with samples from old B-movies. I am not quite sure whether it is more Flesh or Flash Gordon but from the opening salvo of this it sounds like earth has already been wiped out. Vocals are nuts and there are backing screams going on here just adding to the utter brutality. The samples are excellent and really add to things as well as allow the listener to pause for breath between the numbers. ‘Devil Girl From Mars’ may sound like an escaped Cramps or White Zombie song but here it grooves and blasts away, slower than the opening number but no less aggressive. After having seen Milking The Goat Machine recently I can only wonder if this lot throw any sort of concept into their live shows, if so it must be a riot. Nice over the top breeeeee action too.
This is a great way to kill half an hour and it’s half an hour that’s great to spend killing to. There are no winners and losers, all the bands are well worth checking out so well done to the label for lumping them all together.
