Artist: Lesbian Bed Death
Album: Designed By The Devil - Powered By The Dead
Type: EP
Label: Psychophonic Records

Lesbian Bed Death, the Gothic Rock band from the UK, have acquired a cult following from around the globe. Their first album ‘I Use My Powers For Evil’ was released on Halloween 2006, and now on their second full length album release ‘Designed by the Devil – Powered by the Dead,’ we will see just how far these Goths have come in 4 years.

The intro to the first and titled track ‘Designed By The Devil – Powered By The Dead’ sounds quite eerie and almost torturous, then jumps in rapidly with a quite commercial type riff. The vocals are not brilliant but then again not the worst I’ve heard and it gives us girls a chance to sound good on Karaoke! It’s reminding me straight away of music that could be put on an American girlie film like ’10 things I hate about you’. I wasn’t inspired at all by this track, it droned on and didn’t change much at all and I was quite worried to listen to the rest of the album. Track 2 ‘ Moonlight’ came without me even noticing, but at least this one sounded better, the vocals much better and the riffs sounding almost Blink 182 (OK not great but better than the first track, trust me). The lyrics to this track are definite thumbs up from me, the vampire lyrics included “She always stays out late, to hunt and drink the blood of humans, I saw your girl last night, oh yeah.. She’s undead!” A few other tracks worth a mentioning were; ‘Drowning (In Your Love).’ This was probably my favourite track off the album with heartfelt lyrics, emotional but simple riffs and a steady drum pattern, almost a little like Depeche Mode. Track 7, ‘Mr Nasty Time’ is quite a cracker! The lyrics are the best thing about it such as “He wants to take you home, He’ll put Champagne in your glass and cocaine up your ass”. The more I listen to this track the more I think I’d probably get up for a good rock out to it. ‘Sinner’ is a change to the rest of the album with a beautiful 45 second acoustic guitar intro. Last on the Album ‘Drowning the Phoenix’ is pop rock Goth, with an almost Marilyn Manson style riff.

OK on the whole, this album isn’t bad. I’ve never heard of this band before so was unaware of what to expect from them. The cover of the album makes them look like another ‘woe is me’ Goth band, but thankfully I was wrong. The vocals maybe a little too loud and the rest of it a little cheesy, but halfway through listening to this album I found myself enjoying it. So if you like a little cheese girlie metal then it’s a winner for you.
