Artist: UFO
Title: The Best Of A Decade
Type: Album
Label: SPV
UFO compilation albums are ten a penny, but before you turn away disinterested this one is a little bit different. Best Of A Decade is made up solely of tracks from the most recent incarnation of the band with six string wizard Vinnie Moore on guitar. If you lost track of the band after their ‘70s heyday then this album will show you just how good UFO still are. All sixteen tracks are taken from You Are Here, Monkey Puzzle, the live Show Time and last year’s excellent The Visitor and each one is a testament to UFO’s enduring relevance. This is a feast of quality hard rock and even if vocalist Phil Mogg won’t see sixty again you’ll be hard pressed to find many finer singers of any age. The live renditions of ‘Lights Out’, ‘Too Hot To Handle’ and ‘Doctor Doctor’ are, of course, brilliant but it’s the more recently penned anthems that really hit the spot. ‘Saving Me’, ‘Helldriver’, ‘Can’t Buy A Thrill’ – all taken from The Visitor – and ‘Mr. Freeze’ from You Are Here in particular are irresistible. Of course if you’ve kept up with all things UFO then The Best Of A Decade is as throw away as compilations get, but for those who have let their allegiance slip, or the merely curious, then this should be the perfect springboard into the wonderful modern world of UFO.
