The heavy power metallers ‘Wolfcry’ hail from Greece and formed in September 1992 by drummer Andreas. A short two months later the band were in the studio to record ‘Angelsign’ but unfortunately the track was never released and the band took a hefty four years out and in 1996 the bad was reformed and got straight on to recording studios for their first demo ‘The Ivory Tower’ which became popular through a compilation cd given out in a metal magazine.
Wolfcry’s first album ‘Power Within’ was released in November 2001 by local record company Black Lotus. The album received a great deal of reviews from all over. Their second album ‘Nightbreed’ was released by the same record company in June 2003. Also in 2003 they added two new band members for guitar and keyboards. In 2005 they released their third full length album ‘Warfare’. With their latest release, ‘Glorious’ they were lucky enough to get it mastered at Jailhouse Studios in Denmark by Tommy Hansen (Helloween).
The first track on ‘Glorious’ is ‘God of Deception’ which plunges in with some simply epic riffs and a unique drum sound. The vocals straight away are quite stunning. Even if the music is little mixed up at times, the vocals just win you over and the guitar solo beautiful and so 80’s! Another belting track was ‘Holocaust of Nothing’. The intro has an almost battle like feel and then graduates to a steady riff with the vocals blaring, sounding a little like a Greek Bruce Dickinson. The solo again, amazing; can’t fault them at all.
I found something quite special with all the tracks, but a quick taster of a few others are; ‘The Golden Era’ with its grindy riffs that make your head nod and making you want to punch a fist in the air in the style of Manowar! ‘Payback time’ is one of two favourites for me, purely for the fact it’s seemingly made for a good old fast headbanging session. ‘Vile Mind’ another fast track in which the vocals are much deeper and sounding quite evil and growls a plenty! (A good cough would probably help this poor guy out).
A melodic soothing piece for the intro to ‘Face the Fear’ then following on from where we left off, some fast and sounding quite complicated riffs. Heartfelt lyrics go brilliantly well with the music. The drumming and the intro towards the middle section are obviously old school Metallica inspired. Last but not least ‘I, The Sinner’ my other favourite track, with its crisp clear guitar work for the intro then some heavy bass, followed by some folk type music, Yes! Toward the end of the track, harmonic choir and a galloping drum beat, really shows sums up the front cover of the album, a grim reaper with wings, standing on top of a cliff.
All in all, a cracking album. Production work to perfection, vocals amazing, guitar solos? My god! The best solo’s I have heard in some time. Definitely could be a festival favourite. Which begs the question... when are they coming to the UK?
