When I got asked to review a couple of CDs for my friend, I thought that it would be a good opportunity to practice my writing skills. I had never heard of the band Zeropunk before, but I was open to listening to them. I had been told that they were more my kind of thing, you know sort of Tool and Nine Inch Nails. That perked me up and I thought to myself “sure, why not?” It turns out, it’s not as easy as it seems!
When I did a bit of research into the band, I found it surprising that they were from here in the United Kingdom as they carried the style of so many American bands before them such as the aforementioned Nine Inch Nails and Tool. Their self-titled album opens with the very catchy track ‘Welcome To The Future’ and keeps you hooked throughout and carries you through the various emotions that you experience up until the calming ‘Tide Comes In.’
I must admit, when I first listened to the album, I thought to myself that Zeropunk must have plucked a random bloke off the street to perform the vocals but if you listen to it more than once, you realize that it is about more than the vocals, despite the fact that you want to be drawn to them and you want them to be appealing to your ears. The musical arrangement of the album is excellent, it is well-produced and it sounds professional – though it’s a shame I don’t have speakers that do the music justice!
‘The Portal,’ the second track off the album is one of those punk/pop songs that you feel would do well in the mainstream and in the charts due to the harmonies merging well with the guitars and the consistent beat.
I found the further into the album you delved, the harder the lyrics of the tracks sucked you in. It’s obvious that the band want to get your attention with the opening track, but once they have you in their world it becomes clear that they have something to say and they’re determined to make you listen.
Overall, this is a spectacular album (and band) for fans of industrial/rock music. I look forward to hearing more from them.
